12 years suffering - Woman in pain after failed ‘tie off’ surgeries
Delrose Gordon, a 48-year-old mother of eight, said she has been living
in unimaginable pain and suffering for the past 12 years following what
she deems to be the negligent actions of doctors at the Victoria
Jubilee Hospital and Kingston Public Hospital.
She is imploring on the relevant authorities to launch a proper investigation into her situation, as she got pregnant twice, after having two separate tubal ligations or 'tie off's' at Victoria Jubilee, and has been living in excruciating pain ever since the first procedure.
However, the hospital is denying having knowledge of her as a patient, despite her having a docket number 14-17-51 assigned by the hospital, and despite the fact that seven of her children were delivered at the facility.
THE WEEKEND STAR obtained copies of the birth certificates showing that the children were indeed born to Gordon at the Victoria Jubilee Hospital.
Gordon said her tribulations started in 2005 when she was admitted to the Victoria Jubilee Hospital to undergo a Caesarean section with her eighth child.
"Them said it complicated fi have her, so me haffi do 'tie off', which me neva want the 'tie off'. They said it's a life and death thing, and them talk to me, and encourage me, so me sign the paper to do the 'tie off'," Gordon told THE WEEKEND STAR.
She said she continued to feel severe abdominal pains two years after the procedure, but doctors kept telling her it was normal and that she should wait until her medication takes effect. Around August 2007, Gordon was rushed to hospital after experiencing severe pains and bouts of unconsciousness, where multiple tests revealed she was pregnant, despite the fact that her had her tubes tied. She said it almost drove her to insanity.
"Me tell them carry me down a Bellevue Hospital. All now me nuh get over it. Is like the doctors them shocked. Them ask if me sure me do a tie off," Gordon said.
The foetus started growing inside Gordon's Fallopian tube, so the pregnancy had to be terminated, and the damaged Fallopian tube removed.
"A deh so she feel pain because the baby burst the tube, and if we neva rush wid her, she woulda die," Gordon's husband, Garfield Gordon, explained.
Gordon said doctors then tied the remaining Fallopian tube again, and she was assured that she would not be able to conceive. But, to her horror, she got pregnant again in 2009, and suffered a miscarriage.
"When me go down there the doctors gather around me on the bed and say this is a miracle," Gordon said.
Having endured such tremendous physical and psychological trauma, Gordon employed the services of a lawyer, who wrote several letters to the hospital to secure a medical report but to no avail, as the hospital denies having knowledge of the patient.
The lawyer initiated a lawsuit against the state in 2010, but the matter was struck out because there was no medical certificate.
However, Gordon said she is not giving up until she gets redress for the injustice done to her. She has written letters to Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton, and is now imploring on Prime Minister Andrew Holness and everyone with influence to ensure justice is served.
